Dear Editor,
The recent assurances given by Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Chief of Staff, at best, are hollow. It was a poor attempt at damage control and aimed at a population target which every Tom, Dick and Best thinks is gullible. And indeed, we very often are, or appear to be.
A few years ago 40 odd AK-47s and thousands of rounds of ammunition were stolen from the GDF. Camp Broomes went up in flames. Accidentally? Twenty COs and NCOs have been found with arms and ammunition “for purposes of shooting during training”. What poppycock!
It challenges one not to believe that a “build up” was in the process. Coup de ‘tat? Mutiny? Gang building? Rental of weapon and ammunition?
The Commodore sought the easy way out: – The officers “breached” the Force’s SOPs. Very diplomatic!
Don’t we have enough examples in both the GDF and GPF where senior officers have been engaged in nefarious activities? These people don’t drop out of the skies. They have been in league with criminals long before they are found out. And ranks in the Forces know. But, I guess the Chief of Staff and the Commissioner of Police are many layers removed from the action, or perhaps do not enjoy the respect and/or loyalty of their subordinates.
I have written before that Commodore Best is not suited as Chief of Staff. But I suppose most Commander-in–Chief wants a ‘Yes Man’ as his Chief of Staff. We should be looking towards Colonel Lovell. He is a professional soldier who has the respect of the soldiers.
I don’t think that it would surprise anyone if these offending officers get off with a slap on the wrist. Even if they were to be dishonorably discharged or disciplined, it is anybody’s guess what they will do for a living after. Godfrey Skeete Ex GDF Soldier
