Dear Editor,
Sports scholarships seems to have died for potential sports ambassadors from Guyana, and maybe it could be because we are from the third world.
Interesting enough, Tamika Garnett ran with a report in the SN dated June 2, 2010 and headlined “Jevina Sampson in line for Singapore Youth Olympic Scholarship.”
Reading the headline, I was very overjoyed until I actually got in depth of the reading and was indeed disappointed. I tell you the reason.
In my opinion, whenever such opportunities knock on our door, you grab it because we are almost at the back of the line and we should never hesitate in taking/accepting such an offer. I continue with my belief, that we possess competitive sports ambassadors.
With all due respect to the parent, Miss Dian Gladstone and the in line athlete, I sincerely respect your concerns, but I don’t think that there is anything to loose from accepting a scholarship. Life is all about different episodes and making adjustments.
If for some reason your representation to the meeting with the overseas selection committee would be one that you would have already made a decision with, I urge you to decline at this moment.
The local arm of the overseas selection committee should have the next potential candidate in preparation to attend that meeting with his/her parent/s who might very well be prepared and willing to accept such an offer of a lifetime sports scholarship. T. Pemberton
