For the 11th consecutive year, Guyoil through its Castrol brand will be sponsoring a 50-mile cycle road race which will attract the cream of Guyana’s cyclists.
Among the competitors will be many fathers and potential dads who will match pedals for the top spots and prizes on offer in the various categories.
Alonzo Greaves will start as favourite based on his consistent performances to date and his win in the P&P Brokers & Consultants feature 35-lap contest last Saturday at the National Park.
Mounting a serious challenge however, will be Robin Persaud who has been turning in consistent top performances and will be aiming to upstage Greaves on Sunday. So too will be Warren Mc Kay, Enzo Matthews, Turhan Harris and Walter Grant-Stuart who placed in the top six Saturday last.
With last year’s winner of both the senior and junior categories Christopher Holder focusing on his education, Paul De Nobrega will start as favourite to win the junior category.
Upright riders as well as veterans under and over 50 will also be competing for the spoils come Sunday.
The riders will be sent on their way from the Wales Police Station at 09:00hrs, pedal their way to Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.
Veteran and upright cyclists will turn back at Uitvlugt Community Centre to finish at the Harbour Bridge also.
The first 6 overall finishers, first 3 juniors, upright and veterans will all be rewarded; 8 prime prizes will be at stake during the course of the race. The first veteran over 60 to complete the race will receive a special trophy from the organizer, Hassan Mohamed.
Last year’s winning time was one hour 58 minutes 49 seconds.
