Team c/ships shoots off today
After being overtaken on the second day, Guyanese shooting sensation Ransford Goodluck fired back to win the 2010 West Indies Fullbore Individual Shooting Championships at the Paragon Ranges, Christ Church on Thursday evening.
Overcoming challenging conditions and healthy competition from some of the best shooters in the Region, Goodluck won two of four ranges on the final day – both with possibles – to capture his 6th individual title at this level, having won back in 2008 in Jamaica.
Enjoying excellent form in the past two months, Goodluck shot the final range (600) like a man possessed to record a possible of 50 with 8 V’s to cart off the top spot. He described the win as “Really, really special”.
Goodluck, won ahead of Trinidadians Norris Gomez (President of the West Indies Fullbore shooting Council) and Justin Lall with Guyanese Dylan Fields placing 4th with Barbadian female Ms. Sharon Marshall taking the 5th place.
Marshall showed real class, stamina and poise in winning the difficult 1000 yards range ahead of all and sundry with a possible, 50-2.
The Guyanese proved their dominance at this level despite not having the chance to practice as often as their rivals with five shooters placing in the top 10 including veteran Richard ‘Dickie’ Fields who placed 9th. Team Captain Mahendra Persaud finished 6th, USA based John Fraser 10th and Ryan Sampson, 14th.
The dominance of the Women shooters was evident as the other two competitors, Barbadians Jennifer Jordan-Cousins and Shell Ann Hinds finished 12th and 13th overall.
The O’ Class (Junior) went to Antiguan Desroy Maile with an overall aggregate of 400-25, he ended 16th overall. Barbadian Neil Braginton won the T Class (Beginners) category (390-18), he placed 27th out of a field of 55 competitors.
Goodluck noted that his win is all the sweeter since he is recovering from illness and he is into good form but there is still room for improvement.
“I’m shooting better than I used to but I’ve got some room for improvement. My objective is to get as good as I can and right now I’m on that road, I’m getting there – I’m happy but not satisfied. There are a lot of things I need to do to get better.”
The local and regional competitions Goodluck states are mere stepping stones to Bisely (England) and ultimately, the Commonwealth Games set for India later this year.
“As long as I can keep improving my form, it will put me in a better position to deliver at the Commonwealth Games and that is what I am really working towards, it’s my ultimate objective.”
So with the individual competition out of the way, it’s now down to the team competition which starts today at the same venue. Guyana will be defending both the short and long range titles.
