By Franklin Wilson
When Guyana’s Lady Jags commence their historical training camp in Canada from next Monday to Friday at the Pickering Soccer Club, foremost in the minds of the players and coaching staff is qualification to the final round of the Women’s Gold Cup competition later this year in the USA.
Technical Director of the Guyana Football Federation Women’s Programme, Mark Rodrigues, who has been very passionate about female development in Guyana, is positive that the Lady Jags will bring Guyana glory.
The Pickering Soccer Club is equipped with an artificial field similar to the one the Lady Jags will be playing on in Trinidad and Tobago at the Marvin Lee Stadium from May 10, 2010.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Rodrigues disclosed that the camp which will feature 3 locally based players will kick off on Monday from 12:00hrs with fitness, technical, functional and pattern of play sessions lasting for 3 hours.
On Tuesday, the players under the guidance of Rodrigues, Head Coach Chris Brown, Coach Wayne Dover, Goalkeeper Coach & Trainer Ali Tabrizi and Physiotherapist Michelle Latimer will do a fitness and tactical training session along with set plays also from 12:00hrs to 15:00hrs.
Wednesday will see the players doing a tactical session (pattern of play, stop and go’s revision of set plays) from 12:00hrs to 13:30hrs. A practice/friendly game will be played on Wednesday evening from 21:00hrs.
Thursday’s training session will be focused on what was observed from Wednesday evening’s game and that will also last for 3 hours from 12:00. Another practice/friendly game will be contested on Thursday evening from 21:00hrs.
The finals session on Friday will be dedicated to tactical training, pattern of play and set plays while on Saturday, the team departs Canada for Trinidad and Tobago.
According to Rodrigues, the focus apart from comprehensive preparation is to ensure continued exposure for the programme. “We intend to advance to the third and final round and establish ourselves as one of the Caribbean’s top teams.”
Quizzed on if they {Technical Team} have any knowledge of the opposing teams, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and St. Lucia, Rodrigues responded, “Yes, Chris Brown was put in charge of gathering such information and has been very successful in obtaining what is required to get a relatively accurate assessment of our competition.”
The Technical Director stated that his ultimate aim during this campaign is to successfully advance to the Gold Cup while making sure that the team is properly prepared and continually improving as they progress.
Rodrigues commended the GFF for their unflinching support for the programme to date. “The GFF has been 100% supportive of this initiative and must be commended for their continued commitment to Football’s development in Guyana. The business community is slowly coming on board, but we need long term partnerships to continue the development of football for Guyana.”
In order to stimulate the support of the business community Rodrigues will be doing a business presentation on Friday May 7 for the Diaspora’s business community. Approximately 60 persons are expected to attend.
Mr. Danny Doobay will deliver the keynote address while GFF President Colin Klass and Programme Manager of the Women’s Programme Colin Baker will also do presentations.
