Receives $300,000 worth of gear
Boxing became the latest sport in Berbice to benefit from the aid of Guyana’s leading Club, the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club.
The Pepsi Under-19, Gizmos & Gadgets Under-23, Farfan & Mendes Under-15, Metro Female and Bakewell Under-17 cricket teams recently handed over $300,000 worth of items to the Central Boxing Gym which is located in the Central Police Station Compound at New Amsterdam.
Among the items handed over were boxing gloves, head guards, seed guards, ring ropes, ring corner cushion, educational and hygiene kits, one trophy, ringside electric clock and training uniforms.
The Club also donated a set of items for the club to do a community project involving young mothers as part of a major Public Relations drive. Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster who was instrumental in making the donation possible noted at the presentation that the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club was totally committed to the development of all sports in Berbice.
The club so far this year has assisted over 50 groups and sports entities with over $2M in gear including basketball, chess, volleyball, table tennis, cricket and football.
Boxing, Foster reminded, is the only sport that has won international titles for Guyana and attracted youths mainly from less fortunate families. The boxing gear were in storage at the RHTY&SC’s office for over five years after the Club closed down its own boxing gym.
The Secretary urged the Executives of the Central Boxing Gym to take proper care of the items and to make sure that they are used for the intended purpose.
He challenged the Gym to work hard to produce national champions in the near future for Berbice while at the same time making sure that all the boxers make education the key goal in their lives.
CEO of the Gym and former national champion Jeff Roberts expressed his profound gratitude to the club for its assistance while praising Foster for his leadership of the RHTY&SC. Roberts stated that he wanted to approach the club for assistance but he was contacted first by the donor.
The Central Boxing Gym, Roberts stated was resolute in becoming the best in Guyana and a strong emphasis would be placed on hard work and discipline.
Gym President Abid Ali praised the Club for its continued programme of assisting others to fulfill their dreams and expressed thanks to Foster for spending over two hours with the gym executives and sharing ideas on how to become a successful organisation.
Neil Pike and Surendra Kissoonlall of the Pepsi Under-19 Team and Shemaine Campbelle of the Metro Female team handed over the equipment and urged the members of the gym to always “Say no to Drugs and Yes to Education”.
