Port Mourant Turf Club Easter Meet on today
A massive crowd is expected to converge at the Port Mourant Turf Club today.
The question of who will be the champion horse at the Port Mourant Horse Race Meeting will be answered today when the club stages its Easter event, at the club’s facility in Berbice.
According to the Organisers, all the ingredients are in place for what is expected to be a gruelling day of competitive racing.
With eight races listed to be contested and over $3.5M in prizes and other incentives available which will include cash, trophies and other memorabilia including gate prizes the arena is expected to be jam packed.
The track is in excellent condition and some lightening fast times are anticipated to be recorded.
Regarded as one of the oldest clubs in the country, a sea of colours will be witnessed today and the authorities have left nothing to chance with all the necessary preparations already in place for the mega event.
According to an official of the club, during the past week all the systems were tested and given the green light and a clean bill of health. The grand stand underwent massive rehabilitation which will enable turfites to watch horse racing in absolute comfort.
Over 70 of the country’s top horses have registered in what is expected to be the biggest race meet on the racing calendar for the year so far.
Of the eight races listed to be contested on the day’s programme four are feature events for horses classified ‘B’ and Lower, the 3 year-old Open, ‘E’ class gallops and the G and Lower which will see the top horses in action
The mouth watering feature ‘B’ class collision again is the talk of the day and with beverage giants Banks DIH Limited upping the ante with a whopping sum of over half a million dollars including the winning trophy for the champion, a grand showdown is expected. The distance is just over a mile and with such massive takings the forecast looks good.
The event will pit the likes of the Veteran Delmur Gold and Miss Republic of the Elcock Stables, Annie’s Play Mate, Tropical Passion, Home Bush Baby, Sweet Caramel and Fresh Prospect.
Of late no horses have been able to stake a claim to be the champion animal in the feature B or C Division, with a different winner in the last four encounters.
The three year old Derby which is for animals bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies has its fair share of excitement over a distance of six and a half Furlongs, as the winner is set to receive a tantalizing $350,000.
Top horse Zenyatta will start as hot favourite, however the likes of Celebration Time, Peaceful, Stormy Lass, Gabriel Gold, Zionata and the newly imported Megan’s Choice will all be aiming for the upset win.
The champion jockey and Trainer will receive trophies compliments of Ramesh Sunich of Trophy Stall, Bourda market.
Meanwhile, Digicel have sponsored the two ‘I’ class races and those are expected to produce some exciting races as well.
