At age 65, Guyanese born United States of America Powerlifter Nairanjan Singh, popularly known as Jan Singh is promising to roll heads in the 65-70 age-group (Masters 111) at the 4th Caribbean Bench Press and Powerlifting Championships which starts at the Princess Hotel at 11:00hrs.
Singh, whose foundation in the sport was built right here in Guyana back in the 60’s and 70’s as a member of the Kingsrow Barbell Club which is still in existence, said he was happy to be back in Guyana to compete after being out of the sport for the past 4-5 years.
The Maryland based Singh told the media yesterday at the National Stadium Conference room that he has been the Maryland State champion for the past 15 years in his age group. He said he has held a number of records over the years including a squat of 406 in a single lift competition. He also has a bench press record of 298 also achieved at a single lift competition.
Singh is encouraging member of the public and fans of the weights sport to come out in their numbers to enjoy exciting and nerve racking competition, today and tomorrow. Singh is one of two lifters representing the USA at this championship.
