On the morning of March 2, 2010, Basil Phillips died. He was 86. He was born on May 17, 1923.
He was buried yesterday after a funeral service at Smith Memorial Congregational Church, Brickdam.
In a tribute at his funeral, Vibert Parvatan, a colleague said that Phillips lived a very productive and exemplary life which impacted positively on the lives of many Guyanese and the country as a whole.
“Basil Phillips and I shared some things in common. We were both Agriculturalists. For many years, he served with distinction at the Guyana Agri Bank, where he was known countrywide by the farming community. He was approachable and served with commitment and dedication.”
At the old High Street Radio Station, Basil Phillips’s radio programmes were captioned “the Farmers’ Notebook” and “Farming World”. “He would deal with a variety of crops in great detail from sowing the seed to harvesting. He ended his programme saying “this is Basil Phillips, your friend and good neighbour. Happy Farming.”
“Basil Phillips was my friend and colleague and I felt a sense of personal pride in knowing that he regarded me as his friend.
“Basil Phillips sowed many seeds of a non-agricultural nature. In our multi racial society he sowed seeds of love, understanding, unity, respect, discipline, kindness, tolerance and love for country.”
