Moen Gafoor back in winners’ row after sterling performance

Moen Gafoor rebounded from a dismal performance in the just concluded Youman Nabi scrabble tournament, where he failed to earn a podium spot, to out-spell a field of worthwhile contenders and cart off the Phagwah Open tournament when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged that tournament at the Malteenoes Cricket Club, Thomas lands yesterday afternoon.
Gafoor amassed a total of 5 points and a positive spread of 529 to relegate Ewart Adams (4 points and a positive spread of 477) to second place. After a prolonged absence from the podium, Orlando Michael managed to chalk up as many points as Adams but had to be content with third place by dint of a lower spread of 311.
Gafoor started the day on a losing note, dropping his inaugural game to Floyd Carmichael (5). He then eked past Ulric Harris (11) in the second round and closed off the morning sessions with a drubbing over Ruby Cummings (73).
The afternoon sessions also belonged to Gafoor after he cleaned up Nicholas Grant (217), Fred Collins (52) and Colin Chichester (181).
Adams registered two losses, in the first round to James Krakowsky (108) and the fourth to Chichester (13). He chalked up victories over Maurice Munroe (60), Ulric Harris (145), Ruby Cummings (198) and Fred Collins (185).
Meanwhile, the executive of GASP has identified a team of players to attend training sessions in preparation for the upcoming Tri-Nation Scrabble tournament scheduled for Trinidad and Tobago shortly.
