Essequibo’s Kenneth Melville sets new squat record
Marvin Richards of Buddies Gym, competing in the 90kg division was crowned the best lifter at the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) Novices Championship which was held on Sunday last at the Saint Stanislaus College Auditorium Brickdam, Georgetown.
Runner-up to the overall winner, 20 year old Kenneth Melville of Essequibo proved that the out of town lifters can be as competitive as their city based rivals when he set a new squat record of 271.5 kg competing in the 110 kg class.
Richards had a best squat of 255kg, bench press of 147.5 and deadlift of 227.5 for an overall total of 630 to take the overall champion’s prize.
Melville set a new deadlift record of 272.5 kg to emerge as the only record breaker on the day.
He recorded a best squat of 240 and bench pressed 137.5.
Taking the 3rd place out of the 5 competitors on the day apart from the four guest lifters was another Buddies Gym athlete, Shawn Henry who took part in the 82.5 kg class. Henry recorded a best squat of 205kg, bench pressed 115kg and had a deadlift of 207kg.
Kingsrow Barbell Club’s Quincy Clarke placed 4th overall with a total of 307.7, squat (170), bench press (92.5) and a deadlift of 190.
Another Kingsrow Barbell Club member, Petamber Gewan took the 5th spot recording an overall total of 497.5kg; squat 182.5, bench press 110 and deadlift 205 competing in the 110 kg category.
The four guest lifters were Kingrow’s Paul Adams in the 67.5 kg class (squat 207.5; bench press 122.5; deadlift 210), Bhojkumar Jagnarine (82.5k) of Hardcore Berbice (squat 227.5, bench press 110, deadlift 255).
Farouk Abdool of Hardcore gym, Berbice recorded a best squat of 275, bench press 157.5 and deadlift of 255 for a total of 687.5. Upper Demerara’s Colin ‘Mr. Clean’ Chesney the other guest lifter recorded a best squat of 295, bench pressed 145 and had a deadlift of 252.5 for an overall total of 692.5. The GPAF will now focus their attention on the 4th Annual International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) / North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF) / Caribbean Islands Bench Press & Powerlifting Championships which Guyana will host from March 18-20, 2010 at the Princess Hotel, Providence, East Bank Demerara.
