“Everyone is healthy, the starters are in excellent shape and I’m satisfied with the progress we’ve made so far,” were the confident words expressed by Technical Director of Guyana’s ‘Lady Jaguars’ Mark Rodrigues shortly after they wrapped up another training session yesterday afternoon at the GCC ground.
Rodrigues is being assisted by National Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover, Goalkeeper Coach / Trainer – Ali Tabrizi, Coach- Chris Brown and Andrew Hazel.
He disclosed that he is not worried about the level of fitness among the players, adding that that aspect of the programme begun since last December and has continued until now. He revealed that the mood in the camp is very positive, pointing to the trip to Splashmin’s Resort on Sunday as one of the reasons for that.
“The girls had a good time at Splashmin’s where they got to know each other better during a session that dealt with the mental aspects of the game after which they swam and had much fun.”
He stressed the importance of the session which helped to foster a better union amongst the players, bearing in mind that they are coming from different backgrounds and countries so it was really necessary for them to crystallize ahead of the two engagements against Suriname and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
Quizzed on whether he knew anything about the opposition, Rodrigues said that the friendly encounter against Suriname last December which we won did allow him to gain some crucial information about them.
“We are extremely grateful for that friendly encounter since it enabled us to get ideas about the things they do well and don’t do well and we will be focusing on both in out strategic build up,” Rodrigues disclosed.
He, however, reminded that the encounter was an international friendly and even though it would have given us a psychological advantage, we must not forget that come Friday, the clash is a World Cup qualifier.
The ‘Lady Jaguars’ session yesterday afternoon was about the defensive philosophy of the programme and it included set plays, defending corner kicks and throw-ins and marking an opponent.
Sessions continue today at 09:00 hrs at Camp Ayanganna ground.
