Dominique Greaves, 32, of 169 Fourth Street, Alexander Village, was yesterday denied his pre trial liberty by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates Court, yesterday.
It was alleged that Greaves stole three gold rings from his former lover, Sattie Persaud, on January 3, last. The rings cost some $350,000. He pleaded not guilty and was represented by attorney at law Trenton Lake. The lawyer, in a bail application, told the court that Greaves was a clothes vendor and that the incident stemmed from pure malice.
The lawyer further noted that his client had no previous brushes with the law, nor would he interfere with witnesses.
He also noted that Greaves was no flight risk and would return to court once granted bail.
Lake told the court that the matter should be dealt with some amount of caution. He explained that on the day in question, when Persaud lost the articles they had an argument.
He said that his client left Persaud’s home and she called two days later telling him that the rings were stolen and that she would lock him up. According to the lawyer, Greaves was on King Street when he was pursued by the police who struck him down with a motor vehicle. He sustained injuries to the body. The lawyer further asked that bail be granted in a reasonable sum.
However, Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford objected to bail. He said that on the day in question, Greaves was stopped by the police and they attempted to arrest him. He resisted and rode away; he was pursued by the police. The prosecutor said Greaves fell off the bike after he was trying to escape from the police, adding that the police vehicle never touched him. Telford said that if bail was granted there is the likelihood of the accused fleeing the jurisdiction.
Bail was denied by the magistrate. Greaves is expected to make another court appearance on February 19.
