The Ministry of Agriculture is advising farming communities adjacent to rivers and sea defence to take necessary precautions to avoid water accumulation and possible flooding as the spring tide is in effect resulting in overtopping of sections of the East Coast sea defence.
According to the National Weather Watch Station, the spring tide, which commenced yesterday, will continue until January 6, 2010.
Earlier today, Agriculture Minister, Robert Persaud and technical officers inspected vulnerable communities along the East Coast and interacted with residents and farmers. He pointed out that the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority and the Mahaica Mahaicony Abary Agricultural Development Authority are on full alert to support their sister agency, the Sea Defence Unit.
Further, the Ministry’s National Drainage and Irrigation Authority has already mobilized an excavator which is on standby at Montrose, while clogged residential canals and culverts were cleared.
The Ministry of Agriculture will continue to support its sister Ministry of Public Works and Communication in light of the current El Nino situation with greater monitoring over the next 48 hours.
