Officials will today start meeting irate rice farmers and millers across the country after complaints over payments.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, yesterday, the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) and Guyana Rice Producers’ Association (RPA) were recently mandated by Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, to meet with rice farmers to discuss paddy payment issues, amongst others, in various rice growing regions of Guyana.
“Payments are currently in progress by millers countrywide but farmers are still raising concerns in some areas about the timeline of payments from some millers,” the Ministry said in a statement yesterday.
“The Ministry of Agriculture is therefore calling on millers countrywide to make timely payments to farmers. Special teams of technical officers from GRDB and RPA will be meeting with farmers in the respective areas and discussing ways and means to smoothly resolve the flow of payments.”
Teams will be heading out today to Corentyne, Berbice where at No. 70 Corentyne a meeting will be held at 09:00h. Another Berbice meeting at Black Bush Polder is expected at 11:00hrs.
In Essequibo, there will be a meeting at Vilvoorden at 09:00hrs and another at Paradise for 11:00hrs.
In the Mahaica, West Berbice area, there will be a meeting at the Biaboo, Mahaica River scheduled for 10:00hrs while at Mahaicony another is scheduled for 13:00h. At Blairmont, officials are expected to be there for 15:00hrs.
According to the release from the Ministry, follow-up meetings will be held in the farming areas with GRDB/RPA extension staff.
“The Ministry of Agriculture is kindly requesting farmers to make a special effort to attend the meeting in your respective area so that these issues can be resolved,” the statement urged.
This year, officials said that Guyana will be recording its highest ever rice production.
Last year, record prices were paid for rice after shortages.
