CARICOM/Cuba Day was observed in all CARICOM States and Cuba yesterday. On the occasion of the First CARICOM/Cuba Summit in Havana, Cuba on December 8, 2002, it was agreed by the Heads of Government of CARICOM and Cuba that December 8 would be designated as CARICOM-Cuba Day.
The Government of Guyana said that it is proud to be associated with the strong CARICOM/Cuba relationship, which has been fostered more than 37 years ago.
“It was on December 8, 1972 that Guyana and sister CARICOM States, Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago established diplomatic relations with the Government of Cuba.”
Over this period, the countries of the Caribbean Community and Cuba have established strong economic cooperation and mechanisms for regular political dialogue, which have enriched the relations and provided the basis for the countries of CARICOM and Cuba to work together, for the overall development of their peoples.
The Guyana Government extended gratitude to the Government and people of Cuba for the invaluable assistance that Guyana has received over the years, particularly in the areas of health, education, sports and culture.
