Guyana Care and Treatment Network has made a donation of Nursing Books, Medical Journals and Magazines to the Medical Science Resource Centre (library) of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) yesterday under the patronage of University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, USA.
A press statement from the GPHC noted that the FXB has been working with the Ministry of Health to expand the delivery of HIV care and treatment service in Guyana since 2004.
It was noted that they have made several donations to the health sector over the years, however, this has been the first book donation made by the center.
The representatives of FXB who made the donation were Ms. Nicole Jordan, MPA, Programme Director and Ms. Vivienne Lowe, Programme Co-ordinator. Also present at the handing over ceremony were Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsarran; Director of Medical and Professional Services (GPHC), Dr. Madan Rambarran and the Chief Executive Officer of the GPHC, Michael Khan.
According to the statement, the initiative stemmed from several discussions between the representatives of FXB, the tutors and students of the Rosa School of Nursing and the New Amsterdam School of Nursing.
“During those visits, the need for more reading materials was one of the issues highlighted,” the release stated.
The Medical Science Library was furnished with books on nursing practices, paediatric dentistry, HIV and medicine, blood transfusion therapy, medical surgical nursing, foundations of nursing, maternal child nursing care, nursing care for infants and children, as well as journals on pathophysiology.
The Medical Science Library also received medical journals on compact discs on global annual conferences on tuberculosis, lung disease and research publications from as recent as the year 2008.
Some of these resource materials, such as the magazines, will be strategically placed in departments within GPHC for patients and staff to peruse.
According to the statement, Minister Ramsarran noted that although these reading materials were presented to GPHC, other sites including Rosa School of Nursing and the New Amsterdam School of Nursing, among the other Schools of Nursing will have access to them; as the Ministry of Health and PAHO strive to upgrade all the resource centers in Guyana.
