– Goodwill boxing card disrupted after ring incident
The Guyanese boxing team that traveled to Barbados to engage boxers of that country in a goodwill boxing tournament Saturday evening last, returned home yesterday afternoon after experiencing mixed fortunes.
President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (ag), Eustace Cuffy reported that following an incident involving local welterweight boxer, Trevis King and his Bajan opponent, Ronald Als, Bajan medical practitioners called a premature halt to the proceedings.
Reports are that Als was guilty of roughhouse tactics and during a clinch he wrestled King out of the ring.
The Guyanese boxer tumbled to the floor where he was rendered unconscious. Bajan doctors worked feverishly to revive him and then decided to take precautionary measures to avoid a repetition. They decided to call a halt to the proceedings.
At the time of the stoppage both countries had won two each of the four finished fights.
Bajan welterweight boxer Leonard Heywood had registered a unanimous victory over Guyanese Ron Smith while another Bajan, Richard Blackman had scored a similar victory over local fighter, Troy Billey.
Guyana had registered wins through Laurex Stuart (Lightweight) over Cobie Breedy and Imran Khan (flyweight), over Taj Farley.
Four of the local pugilists did not get a chance to showcase their wares because of the premature halt to the proceedings. They are: Jermaine Dow (middleweight), Clairmonte Gibson (lightweight), Bert Braithwaite (junior/welterweight) and Romeo Norville (heavyweight).
Meanwhile, Cuffy said that barring the incident, the card was well organized and provided valuable activity for the local amateur boxers.
He said though, that he was a mite disappointed with what he regarded as a low blow by the Bajan authorities. Cuffy explained that local boxing administrators were told to confine the boxers participating in the tournament to those with records ranging up to 5 fights.
He said that he complied but upon arriving in Barbados he was surprised by the level of those boxers. He said that the Bajan boxers were all seasoned contenders.
“Nevertheless, our boxers performed credibly and I am proud of them,” said Cuffy.
He was also loud in praise of the high standard of officiating demonstrated by female referee, Ramona Agard.
“Her application was marvelous and I think she should be complimented,” Cuffy related. The card was staged at the Divi Hotel in Christ Church, Barbados. (Michael Benjamin)
