Bermine hammered by 8 wickets in semis
With a star-studded unit including 2 Test cricketers, zone winners Albion were always going to be difficult to beat on home turf.
That Bermine failed to show up ‘mentally’ for their Berbice zone semi-final of the National Neal & Massy first division 40-overs cricket competition on Sunday, made the job that much easier for the hosts.
Test player Sewnarine Chattergoon took 3-16 with his leg-spin while fellow West Indies player Narsingh captured 2-27 and Guyana leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo 2-30 as Bermine were dismissed in the final over for 142.
Former Guyana under-15 Captain Harrinarine Chattergoon (79*) then dominated a century opening partnership with his more celebrated brother Sewnarine (38) as Albion galloped to 146-2 in 27 overs to advance to the zone final and book a place in the national play-off.
In steaming heat and on a placid track and fast outfield, Bermine, without national under-17 batsman Jamally Odle who inexplicable failed to show up for the game despite not playing for Berbice against Demerara at Canje the same day, were asked to bat first.
Former Guyana under-19 Skipper Eugene LaFluer, ex-National U-19 opener Anthony D’Andrade and Devon Clements have been scoring most of the runs for Bermine in the competition and Sunday they all failed to get going.
Talented teenager Keon De Jesus, who was out in the final over for an entertaining 44 with 5 fours and a huge six off national left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, was the only one of the other batsmen to offer resistance.
LaFluer, set to make his senior County debut tomorrow for Berbice against the Rest Team at DCC was just beginning to look ominous when he was run out for 28 with 5 boundaries.
D’Andrade fell to Deonarine for 11, Clements was outfoxed by Bishoo and stumped for 13 while National U-17 player Jamally LaFluer played no shot to a Googlie from Bishoo and was bowled as none of the batsmen put up prolonged resistance.
Skipper Julian Moore (15) also failed to build on a good start although De Jesus’ confident batting took the New Amsterdam side close to the 150 mark after benefiting for 2 chances.
Albion began their reply with all guns blazing and the 17-yea-old right-handed Harrinarine Chattergoon played an array of audacious extra-cover drives as he outscored his brother.
The left-hander Sewnarine, one of the players ignored by the Clyde Butts-led West Indies selection panel for the Champions Trophy, was dropped at point in the first over from former Guyana youth spinner Sean Devers in the final over before lunch and at the interval Albion had raced to 71-0 from 12 overs although off-spinner Charles Shepherd had bowled 5 overs for 13 runs opening the bowling.
After lunch, Harrinarine continued to play his shots while Sewnarine played the supporting role as they took Albion to 119 before the partnership was eventually broken by Devers. Sewnarine, with 5 centuries from 63 first class matches, gloved a ball to the keeper to bring Deonarine to the crease.
Deonarine, who this season became the first batman to score 1000 runs in a regional first class season, edged his first ball from Devers just short of Moore at slip and responded by dancing down the track to hit the off-spinner majestically to the cover boundary like a bullet.
However, with victory just 9 runs away, rookie left-arm spinner Troy Mickle ended an impressive debut first division tournament by picking up his biggest wicket in his short career when Deonarine (5) tried to go over the top but only succeeded in lofting at catch to mid-off.
Harrinarine, miss-stumped and dropped off Clements and put down by the Keeper off Mickle, batted to the end after hitting 13 fours and a six while Berbice player Ranga Latchana (3*) was with him when victory was achieved with plenty of time to spare.
