Christopher Waddell and Claire Cheeks produced outstanding performances when the Japan Karate Association/World Federation (Guyana) held its 2009 National Karate Championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturday.
The event commenced at 13:30 hrs with an address by Chief Instructor of JKA/WF Guyana Sensei Christopher Chaves.
This was followed by the presentation of a Special award (The Master Gichin Funakoshi Trophy) for keen commitment to achieving the guiding principles of Character, Sincerity, Effort, Etiquette, and Self Control. This award was presented to Ms. Maleyha Joseph.
The well organized Championships attracted a relatively large turnout. Chief Judge Sensei Christopher Chaves, Referees Sensei Marvin Singh and Sensei Jennifer Cyrus were among those treated to a high level of competition and highly skilled demonstrations.
The young karatekas trilled the crowd with their competitive spirit and high energy in the competition.
In the Boys 14-16 Kata Division, there was keen competition with Prince Roberts emerging the winner with 19.4 points for Kata Gojushiho-sho which he did with great competence defeating Montel Trotman who acquired 18.9 points for his Kata Bassai-dai.
However, in the Kumite division, Trotman proved supreme by defeating Prince Roberts in the first match, and then defeating Kevin Chin to be become the Champion.
In the 18+ Female division Claire Cheeks won both Kata and Kumite titles. Cheeks scored 19.6 points with Kata-Jion, while Clark scored 19.3 points and Tamika Nicholas finished third with 19.1 points. In the Kumite, Cheeks defeated Clark by scoring 2 points, while Tamika Nicholas defeated Diana Gobin to secure third place.
The final division, the 18+ Male Category, Christopher Waddell won both Kata and Kumite titles, Marlon George placed second in both Kata and Kumite. In the Kata division, Waddell scored 19.3 points with Kata Bassai-dai, George scored 19.0 points, and Mahendranauth Sanichar placed third with 18.8 points. In the Kumite, Waddell scored 1 ½ points against George to emerge the winner.
The closing address was made by Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Culture Youth & Sports-Mr. Alfred King, and Trophies were distributed by Mr. King along with Ms. Bernice Irving, Secretary of the Guyana Karate Federation.
The JKA/WF Guyana would like to thank all sponsors, supporters, volunteers, judges, and the National Sport Commission for the use of the Cliff Anderson Sport Hall.
