Some two months ago I made a report via telephone to the Guyana Water Inc., Chesney Office in Berbice concerning an ever flowing open standpipe on Levi Dam Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice and got a reference number 27/2700.
That pipe is used by many residents in the area, but no one seems concerned to have it properly secured. The irony of it is that those said residents complain that they are not getting potable water and can be seen each hour fetching 5-gal pails from the end of the street to the head.
This is visible to anyone passing on the main public road and GWI employees and managers also traverse that road.
When I made the complaint, I was told by a young lady, who answered the phone that GWI will come in and disconnect all lines in the area! I was making a report to aid in GWI’s campaign to save water and here I was being asked, “Where you getting water from? Do you know it’s illegal to collect water from a neighbours’ yard?
Why y’all don’t pay water rates in the area? What is your meter number?” And she went on. I got frustrated, and slammed the phone down on her.
Now why would I want to help the utility company if I am going to be penalised?
To date, the water still flows incessantly from the tap, which to this day remains open throughout the day and night. No action has been taken by GWI to rectify the situation, but they continue to promote “Save Water, Water is Life”
When the person who answered the phone at GWI, sees this letter, I hope she accepts that her questioning is not helping an already bad situation; it’s worsening it when the utility has to spend millions of dollars to process water. I hope the subject Minister notice this letter and the Manager for GWI, Chesney too.
