A 40-year-old cattle and rice farmer narrowly escaped with his life at 11:00 hrs yesterday after a gang of rustlers chopped and beat him at Ithaca Savannah, West Coast Berbice, before making off with part of his herd.
Nnamdi George, of Number Nine Village, West Coast Berbice, was reportedly found in a semi-conscious condition on a mudflat at Ithaca.
His body bore several cutlass wounds.
He was taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital before being transported by ambulance to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Initial reports indicate that the attack was the work of a gang of cattle rustlers, some of whom are known to the victim.
Kaieteur News was told that George recently bought several cattle and transported them to an area known as Ithaca Savannah, since the area where he resides is inadequate for grazing.
However, a source said that the savannah is also a haven for cattle rustlers and the farmer was forced to watch his herd closely, even occasionally sleeping overnight in the area to ensure its safety.
According to a source, George and another cattle farmer made an arrangement to trade some of their stock yesterday.
They were loading the cattle into two trucks around 11:00 hrs when about nine men, who were armed with cutlasses attacked them.
The truck drivers and the farmer who was involved in the transaction managed to flee but the men reportedly caught George and began to chop him about the body.
It is alleged that the rustlers then dumped the wounded man on a canal mudflat.
Fortunately, a relative of the other cattle farmer informed some of George’s relatives who launched a search for him.
They reportedly followed a trail of blood in the savannahs and eventually found the injured man on the mudflat.
He was conscious but was unable to walk. George was admitted to the GPHC around 17:00 hrs yesterday.
Kaieteur News understands that police have detained a suspect and some of the stolen cattle have been recovered.
