Relatives of Clement Bailey broke into tears yesterday after he was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for killing a young barber at a nightspot in 2007.
Bailey pleaded to a lesser count of manslaughter and sentencing awaited a probation report which was tendered to the court yesterday.
The presiding Judge, Justice William Ramlal, said that he took several factors into consideration before handing down the sentence including the fact that Bailey had been imprisoned for two years awaiting trial and that he pleaded guilty and did not waste the court’s time.
The courtroom was packed with relatives who were visibly disappointed upon hearing the sentence.
Bailey was charged with the murder of West Ruimveldt barber, Clifton Garraway. At the time of the incident Bailey held the rank of Lance Corporal of the Guyana Police Force.
Garraway, 26, was shot dead outside a popular Garnett Street night club on February 25, 2007.
Bailey had made his first court appearance before Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan on March 6, 2007. He was committed to stand trial on March 7, 2008.
