Gunmen yesterday robbed businessman, Motiram Ram called ‘Sham’, of US$1,500 that he was about to send to his children living in the United States. The robbers also made off with $44,000 in local currency.
The incident reportedly occurred around 13:00hrs at the junction of Water and Cowan Streets, Kingston.
According to Ram, he had just changed a sum of money using two different money-changers in the Water Street area.
He said that he got US$1,500 from one money-changer and US$400 from another. Ram, a one-armed butcher of Triumph, East Coast Demerara, noted that he placed the US$1,500 in the same pocket with the $44,000.
He added that he was driving along Water Street to avoid traffic lights. He said that just as he turned into Cowan Street two men on a motorcycle pulled up alongside him.
According to Ram, the pillion rider whipped out a gun and ordered that he “hand over the US”.
He said that when he pulled out the foreign currency the $44,000 fell out of his pocket and the gunmen, who were wearing helmets that covered their faces, saw and demanded that as well.
Ram told this newspaper that he handed over the monies and the robbers fled. He then drove to the police station.
The police are investigating.
