“Mashramani Pan-O-Rama” was the theme of the Republic Bank Mashramani Steel Pan competition, held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall last Saturday night, which thrilled hundreds.
The evening began with the warm remarks of the Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony.
He said that he was happy to see that the ‘art of steel pan’ music is finally coming back, since for some time now it has been a dying art form in Guyana.
The Minister also noted that the Ministry has invested heavily in promoting and building the art of steel pan music.
“This particular competition had at least twenty plus bands prior that were interested in this competition.”
However, only 15 bands competed on Saturday night.
The Minister said that the Republic Bank has been a “great partner” with the Ministry for this competition and expressed hope that the partnership between the two entities continues to be the defining force that will develop the art of steel pan music.
The competition was indeed a splendid event.
There were six categories to judge from: the Senior and Junior Solo, the School and Church Band categories, the Pan Jazz Quintet, and the Seven-a-Side category.
After intermissions of the first three categories, the judges made their decision.
The first place winners for the Solo competition for the junior category went to Akeem Mohamed and the senior category, Michael Smith. Second place winner in the senior category was Clayton Daniels, and the title of third place went to none other than Ray Sparman.
In the School category, grabbing first place was the North Ruimveldt Multilateral school, and second was the Plaisance Community High School.
For the Churches band category, placing first was the Saint Andrews Kirk Steel Orchestra, second was One Steel Orchestra and placing third was the Central Assembly of God.
As for the Pan Jazz Quintet, placing first was the ParkSide Steel Orchestra, second was the Pan Groove Steel Orchestra and placing third the Pan Wave Orchestra.
Last but most definitely not in terms of the enjoyable evening was the ‘Seven-a-side category.’
Placing first was the ParkSide Steel Orchestra, second The Magnificent Seven and third the Pan Groove Steel Orchestra.
The judges were clear and unbiased in their decision, leaving all that attended the show happy and fully energized after a full evening of steel pan music.
