The police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at about 21:35hours on Saturday night at Mandela Avenue, which resulted in the death of an unidentified male pedestrian. The victim is of African descent and is about 65 to 70 years of age. Eyewitness told this newspaper that the man may have survived if he was taken to the hospital sooner.
According to one eyewitness, the man was first struck by a minibus.
“All I see is de man crossing de road and dis bus pick he up, de minibus stop lil and then drive away and by de time anybody coulda pick up de man a car pick he up again,” an eyewitness recalled.
This newspaper was told that the man was dragged a few yards away from where the minibus had stuck him and was trapped under the car before being rescued by public spirited citizens.
According to eyewitnesses, a police vehicle arrived on the scene shortly after but refused to render assistance to the man who was trapped under the car. They left and subsequently returned. It was only when they returned to the scene a third time that they reportedly placed the man in their vehicle and took him to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The man died while receiving medical treatment after being left on a stretcher unattended in the hospital’s emergency room for almost twenty minutes. The driver of the motor car is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
