President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), Mr K A Juman Yassin disclosed that he would be hosting a press conference at the Guyana Olympic House, Church and Peter Rose Streets, Queenstown tomorrow morning starting at 10:00hrs.
He said that the meeting would focus on issues arising out of a recently convened meeting in Curacao to discuss issues relating to the inaugural Caribbean Games slated for Trinidad and Tobago from July 14-19.
While holding details close to his chest, Yassin disclosed that Guyana would be participating in the Games. He further intimated that the meeting attracted the heads of all of the Olympic Associations from across the Caribbean and each head pledged, on behalf of their respective countries, to work assiduously to make the occasion a success.
Yassin also said that the track and field events would be staged during the first three days to facilitate the international stars that would otherwise have engagements in other parts of the world.
Meanwhile, when asked to comment on the current imbroglio within the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Yassin stated that he is only aware of the issue through reports emanating from the media. He said that officials of the GOA could only intervene if they are appraised of the issue in writing.
“Each Association is independent and while they are affiliated to us, we see no need for intervention at the level of the boxing association unless our intervention is sought,” Yassin affirmed.
The GOA czar said that he is aware that the boxing clubs will soon be voting for a president of their choice. “I am hoping that after this meeting, things will return to a state of normalcy,” he said.
Meanwhile, Yassin is urging all media houses to attend the meeting tomorrow morning.(Michael Benjamin)
