-Deputy Commissioner General
Last Thursday’s fire at the Guyana Revenue Authority Office in the Guyana Post Office Corporation Building in no way hampered any of the Revenue Authority’s operations.
This is according to Deputy Commissioner General Clement Sealey.
Sealey told this newspaper that staff members of the GRA are carrying out their duties as usual, and none of the services that they provide on a daily basis has been disrupted.
According to Sealey, none of his staff members has been relocated, as well.
He said that the fire started in a section of the office that is not frequented by staff members, and as such there was no need for relocation.
Sealey said that, fortunately, the fire destroyed only a few old documents.
Meanwhile, he could not comment on what might have caused the fire, but noted that the GRA is currently awaiting a detailed report from the Guyana Fire Service. Sealey added that the GRA has been cooperative with the fire service in their investigations, and will continue to be so.
On Thursday last, quick action by members of the Guyana Fire Service saved the entire GPOC Building from being destroyed.
Reports are that the fire started at some time around 16:40 hours in one of the GRA offices which is housed in the building.
An eyewitness had told this newspaper that the fire was detected by a security guard who works in the area. An alarm was raised and the fire department was summoned.
