Couple remanded for trying to ‘con’Courts

A couple who probably wanted to “fancy up” their home for the Christmas holiday was remanded to prison after a court appearance before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
It was alleged that Alicia Gordon, 30, of SS Hadfield Street, and former member of the police constabulary, now television technician, Stanton Welcome, also 30, of 646 East Ruimveldt, on December 4, at Courts Guyana Inc., endeavoured to obtain one refrigerator, valued at $80,000, and one Sony music system, valued at $80,000.
One of them pleaded guilty.
According to a representative from Courts, on the day in question, the two came into the store trying to obtain credit to buy the items. The representative said that they showed her a job letter, identification card and a rent receipt. The woman said that upon closer inspection she noticed that the identification card did not correspond with the person. The woman said that she immediately alerted the credit manager, who summoned the police.
Gordon, the individual who pleaded guilty, upon hearing that she would be “jailed,” burst into tears. “Your Worship, I gon repay de money”. She was then urged to change her guilty plea, which she did.
According to police prosecutor Denise Griffith, Gordon was relieved from active duty because she had forged a sergeant’s signature to obtain “groceries” from the Police Welfare Department.
She therefore asked that bail be denied for both of the defendants. Bail was denied, and the two are expected to make their next court appearance on December 29.
