Top scrabble players vie for national open championships honours
One week after a sterling performance that earned him a lien on the Metro Lien Trophy, Leon Belony will attempt to add the National Open title to his collection when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) stages its National Open Championships at the Courts Sports Club, Main Street, Georgetown from 10:00hrs this morning.

Though he is in ripping form, Belony will have to be wary of national champion, Fred Collins who, once he finds form, will be extremely difficult to beat.
In the Metro Lien tournament, Belony was on his way to a clean 5 games accumulation when Collins disturbed his sequence with a victory by a spread of 97.
James Krakowsky is another player to watch as he also can create problems once he gets going. In the just concluded Metro Lien competition he started out on bad footing conceding defeats to Wakefield Skeete (39) and Maurice Munroe (3). A determined effort saw him coming back to take four games in a row, by margins of 235, 120, 115 and 202. He was subsequently adjudged second place. Most likely he will attempt to reverse his fortunes this morning.
When one adds Colin Chichester and Moen Gafoor to the mix the situation becomes dicey and selecting a winner becomes somewhat complicated. Other top seeds that will be vying for honours are Grace Hercules, fresh from winning the Handicap tournament. Orlando Michael, a reasonable pound for pound player and newcomer Paul Adams who has created more than his fair share of upsets among the seasoned players.
