Some 50 persons have been screened and selected to be a part of the first batch of patients who will be heading to Cuba for eye care treatment.
They are scheduled to leave Guyana by mid next week.
According to Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsarran, the screening process began some two weeks ago, and the first batch comprised patients who were screened at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
Dr Ramsarran pointed out that screening was conducted at the other three Diagnostic Centres — Leonora, Mahaicony and Suddie.
These centres were chosen because they are all equipped with eye care equipment.
Dr Ramsarran added that the decision was made to reintroduce Miracle Mission because of the incomplete state of the Port Mourant Hospital.
Dr Ramsarran pointed out that since the first Mission Miracle was a success, there are not as many cases as they were expecting.
He added that during the screening, many persons opted to wait until the completion of the Port Mourant Hospital.
Mission Miracle began back in 2006 under the Ministry of Health’s guidance. Screening was done at the Georgetown Public Hospital and a total of some 40,000 persons have successfully gone to Cuba for eye surgery.
The programme is a joint initiative between the Governments of Guyana and Cuba.
