Former Guyana U-19 off spinner, Devon Clements took 3 wickets and conceded a miserly 3 runs to lead Bermine Cricket Club (BCC) of New Amsterdam to a 5-wicket upset over Young Warriors when play in the Nationwide Neal and Massy First Division 40 over cricket competition continued.
Clements’ spell restricted the Young Warriors to 146-9 off their allotted 34 overs propelling the BCC to the top of the table with 14 points from 5 matches, a position that ensures them at least the runner up position in that group.
Their opponents for the next game will depend on the results of the match between Young Warriors and West Berbice, expected to clash soon.
Young Warriors is currently on 8 points with two games remaining while West Berbice has amassed 12 points but still has another match before the finals.
The Bermine team had a disastrous start to their innings, losing 2 early wickets for 48 runs. However, the third wicket pair of Clements (32) and Anthony D’Andrade (37) steadied the innings.
When D’Andrade departed, Dane Benny joined Clements and together this pair added 47 with Benny contributing 16. Clements eventual score was 47 not out.
Young Warriors returned on Saturday to defeat Rose Hall Community Center by 119 runs. Batting first, Warriors compiled 251-8 in their 40 overs. Waheid Edwards (101), Richard Ramdeen (54) and Farouk Hussain (47) were the top batsmen for Young Warriors.
The Rose Hall innings were reduced to tatters after Quesi Maltay and Paul Wintz each picked up 2 early wickets apiece with the score on 10. A fighting effort by Romesh Munna (66) helped restore the innings.
Rose Hall eventually compiled 132 in 39.2 overs which in the end proved inadequate. Maltay was the best bowler for Young Warriors with 4-19.
