BBC=BHARRAT BROADCASTING CORPORATION?
The BBC seems to be in love with Bharrat – and Guyana. Cynics used to call it the BLAIR Broadcasting Corporation cos they reckoned it fawned to Tonee. Now maybe it should be the BHARRAT Broadcasting Corporation.
The man is everywhere on the public service airwaves in Britain at the moment – On Radio, On TV, Online. You Guyanese would say ‘Ponline?
First, the flagship of the TV Current Affairs shows ‘Panorama’ on BBC One, on Monday 8th, featured Guyana, Iwokrama and Bharrat talking about his visionary scheme to make money from the standing rainforests.
As they put it “Can Money Grow on Trees?’ All good stuff, especially when compared to them Brazilians raping their virgin forests to grow soya. Bharrat did an interview for the BBC in a boat. Security men in tow as always. It looked like it was in de bush’ but then look more closely.
You could see the Atlantic Ocean!!! Programme makers call it a conceit – pretending to be somewhere or something you are not.
BJ was at best in the East Demerara Conservancy. At worst, Triumph or LBI! Since when they been part of the Amazonian Rainforest? But Bill cavils – what BJ was saying was important and well said.
BJ was on the BBC World Service radio too. Talking about rainforests again, Plus on the BBC World Service website doing a Bharrat blog – a Viewpoint on, you guessed it, turning Guyana’s millions of acres of forest into a cash asset.
The man is now multi media. You wanna see/hear for yourself then do go to the bbc.co.uk website and pick up your President on a World ‘Flatform’.
That’s just this week. Last month, BJ was on ‘his’ BBC too as part of the three-part prime time BBC One blockbuster series ‘In the Lost Land of the Jaguar’.
There his BBC went into ‘the Bush’(as you Guyanese crudely call those millions of acres of the lungs of the world) to find animals, insects, vegetables and minerals. Few Guyanese in that one, but brilliant photography and very well made.
A treat to watch. Persuade your local TV mogul to beg, borrow or steal (most likely) the ‘Land of the Lost Jaguar’ and show it. You will not be disappointed. Put it ‘pon Sharma! Now.
Bill would expect with all this UK prime time exposure, THAG or the London High Commission would run an ad campaign to re-inforce the delights of our mother’s land. You need Don Gomes to find them ads. If they exist.
Meanwhile, Bill wonders whether President Jagdeo is available for the upcoming series of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’- you call it Dancing with the Stars? Won by a Guyanese Mark Ramprakash two series ago. If he is, we will find a slot for him.
