Sporting a chiseled physique coupled with superb abdominals and a great double lat spread, Mark Perry followed up his scintillating first place performance in the Hugh Ross classic at the National Cultural Centre in April to be adjudged Mr Guyana 2008 when the Guyana Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation staged their Senior Nationals Bodybuilding and Fitness championships at the Banks DIH Thirst Park Complex Friday night.
Perry won from a field of four which included Lindie Sharpe (Universal Barbell, Linden), Clint Duke (Total Package, Linden), and Marlon Bennett (Interline Package, Diamond).
Earlier, Perry had dominated the 186 pounds category to earn a spot in the final four to contest for top honours.
Bennett dominated the 154 pounds category while Clint Duke won in the 165 pounds category. Sharpe won in the 166-176 lbs category.
Sporting a solid muscular figure in the free posing routine, and to the strains of Bob Marley’s ‘Sound of Freedom’ Perry delivered a routine that evoked ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ from the appreciative crowd. Not to be outdone, Oswin Jones displayed superb chest lats, great back muscles and firm abdominals. In the end they proved insufficient to earn the judges’ nod.
The Mr Guyana overall pose down provided fans with entertainment as Bennett, Duke, Sharpe and Perry jostled each other to catch the judges’ eyes. Each attempted to block the judges’ view from their opponents with the contestants exhibiting slick, shrewd moves. In the end the judges felt that it was Perry who had done more than enough to win.
Fiona Harris of Studio 2000 displayed a fine allround performance to win from Alicia Fortune in the Ms Body Fitness open and was the lone competitor in the Ms Guyana Fitness (quarter turns) segment.
Alicia Fortune rebounded with a win over Harris for the Ms Guyana crown and also won the best legs category.
The tournament got underway just after 8 o’clock with the President, Frank Tucker dubbing bodybuilding ‘the mother of all sports.’ He pointed out that competitors in every sport discipline now find it necessary to get involved in bodybuilding activities in order to reach optimum levels in their respective sports.
Minister of Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony, delivering the feature address, urged the executives of the GABBFF to promote the sport in every part of the country.
He pointed to the nexus of his government’s work in the Ministry of Sports and that of the GABBFF.
