The Guyana Medical Watch team has achieved their initial target of reaching out to over 3,000 Guyanese during this year’s sojourn in the country.
The team’s last clinic was held yesterday in Bath Settlement, Berbice, where a total of 594 persons were treated for various illnesses.
The clinic was held at the Bath Settlement Government School, where the complaints received by doctors were those that were similar to the previous clinics.
Most of the cases received were hypertension and diabetes. There were five referrals to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for heart surgeries.
Coordinator of the Guyana Medical Watch Incorporated, Tony Yassin said that there was one serious case brought into the clinic, where the foetus of an expecting female was not moving.
Mr. Yassin said that the woman first visited the New Amsterdam Hospital, where the doctor there confirmed that the baby was not moving. However, he explained that the woman did not have any money and decided to visit the Guyana Watch clinic, where an immediate ultra sound was taken and she was instantly rushed to the Georgetown Public hospital.
The team who arrived in Guyana on July 18, last, visited the Timehri area, the entire West Coast of Demerara, Essequibo Coast, West Bank of Demerara, the Corentyne Coast and the West Coast of Berbice.
In totality, the patients treated at these locations numbered 3,223.
According to Mr. Yassin, the medical team will be back in Guyana next year. He lauded the performance of the doctors, pharmacists and the supporting members, whom he noted worked extremely hard during their time here.
