The University of Guyana’s Berbice Campus (UGBC) is currently hosting its annual reading programme at the Tain Campus. The exercise began on July 14 and concludes July 31, 2008.
The programme targets a group of 60 Grade Five children from the Tain Primary and the Berbice Islamic Schools under the main aim of improving the students’ literacy skills by assisting them in their preparation for the 2009 Level Six Examinations.
The programme is a component of the library community service role, is at no cost to the students of the UGBC, and is facilitated by a group of voluntary staff.
A training session for the UG students was recently conducted which focused entirely on developing methodologies for coaching literacy strategies.
The opening ceremony for the programme was held at the auditorium of the Tain Campus in which donations were made by numerous companies including Republic Bank.
Textbooks for every primary school student is assured through a programme entitled the Education for All Base Track Initiatives.
The students will have an opportunity to display what they have learned during the three-week period to their parents and special invitees.
