With forty-four days remaining before the grand opening of Carifesta X, the ‘1972 house’ in Festival City is yet to be renovated, as was promised.
Yesterday, when Kaieteur News visited the area, Guyana’s flag was being flown at many of the houses in the area, while persons were busy weeding and cleaning the gutters in their surroundings.
Children were in the streets playing, as garbage trucks picked up the rubbish.
Over at the Rudders’ house commonly called the ‘Carifesta house’ or ‘The 1972 house’ Abigail Rudder was busy making dinner.
However, 65-year-old Vermina Rudder told Kaieteur News that she is very frustrated as she anxiously awaits the repair persons to visit her home.
“Every day I looking out for them. They tell we to pack way the house, and we done do that, but nobody ain’t come yet,” the woman said.
Dressing for her picture to be taken as she spoke with this newspaper, the woman said, “I get this house since the last Carifesta, and then my husband gone and left me, and me just upkeep the house.”
The house, at present, is in a terrible state, as the stairway visibly shakes when persons walk on it.
“I know that the house got to fix, so I glad when I hear that it will fix for Carifesta this year. Like I fed up waiting.”
As one walks around the inside of the house, the walls are obviously rotten and the yard can be seen from the spaces and holes in the flooring. Mrs. Rudder’s daughter, Abigail, was in the kitchen area preparing dinner for the family of four.
“Girl, I done put away everything. They tell we that some volunteers from a school gon come. We still waiting. I hope we don’t wait in vain,” she said as she stirred her pot on the stove.
When contacted yesterday, Deputy Mayor Robert Williams said that he cannot give an exact day, but works at the house should commence sometime during this week.
