Police have detained a man who, along with others, illegally dismantled a wooden two-storey property at 53 Norton Street, Lodge yesterday.
The man was apprehended when the caretaker of the unoccupied property called in the police after the men refused to desist from their activity.
The other persons involved in the illegal dismantling of the house managed to escape before the police arrived.
When this newspaper visited the scene, at about 16:00 hours yesterday, at least four men were seen removing the materials from the already dismantled upper flat of the building.
The men told this newspaper that they were contracted to break down the building by a person who had previously occupied it. They claimed that the person had told them that they could take the materials.
However, caretaker Carl Denbow told this newspaper that the men’s claims are far from the truth.
He said that the owner of the house, Keith Massey, resides in Miami, USA, and had requested him to look into his interest.
According to Denbow, the house was previously occupied by tenants, who recently moved out.
He claimed that, early yesterday morning, the men came and started to dismantle the house, and he tried to stop them but was met with stern resistance.
Denbow said that he contacted the owner in Miami, who instructed that he makes moves to have the men stop the dismantling process. He said that Massey made desperate attempts to contact his local attorneys, but was unsuccessful.
Although the building was in a state of disrepair and was endangering another property to the eastern side, police advised that only the City Engineers Department of the M&CC could authorize the dismantling in the absence of the owner.
