DEAR EDITOR,
That conditions in Guyana are symptomatic of the minds of its political and social leaders is obvious to any observer. The infection began spreading soon after the country gained independence from the British.
Thomas de Quincey (1785-1859), an English author and intellectual, explains first how we ended up where we are today, and he also tells us of how we started out getting to here:
“Once a man indulges himself in murder, very soon he comes to think little of robbing; and from robbing he comes next to drinking and Sabbath-breaking, and from that to incivility and procrastination.”
Guyana is in dire need of a revival of basic social standards. Justin deFreitas
