Detective Sergeant Trevor Reid yesterday continued testifying against former army lieutenant, Oliver Hinckson, who has been charged with sedition and advocating the commission of terrorist acts.
The case continued yesterday before Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He is now handling the advocating terrorism charge.
Attorney-at-Law Vic Puran made a submission to have all the evidence obtained after 72 hours of Hinckson’s detention be deemed inadmissible. Special Prosecutor, Sanjeev Datadin, then asked for time to respond to the defence’s submission.
The matter has been adjourned to June 6.
On May 2, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) appointed Attorney-at-Law Sanjeev Datadin to prosecute Hinckson on the sedition and advocating terrorism charges against him.
On April 17, the preliminary inquiry into the advocating terrorism charge against Hinckson commenced.
The prosecution called National Communications Network (NCN) editor-in-chief, Michael Gordon, to the stand as their first witness.
However, Datadin informed the court yesterday that he would like the evidence to be taken in some order and as such he will start with Reid and recall Gordon at a later date. Hinckson remains on remand.
Meanwhile, Hinckson’s gun matter, in which he is jointly charged with James Gibson, was not dealt with yesterday. That matter has also been adjourned for June 26. Hinckson, 64, of Meadow Brook Gardens, was charged on March 11 with sedition and advocating the commission of terrorist acts.
The charges stem from alleged statements he made at a City Hall public forum.
The prosecution is contending that Hinckson uttered a seditious speech to the public news media for the purpose of bringing hatred or contempt to the President/Government, or to promote public disorder, on February 1.
