The impact of HIV in the workplace and the community is likely to be significantly mitigated with the formal introduction of the Guyana Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS. This is according to information emanating from the USAID-funded Guyana HIV/AIDS Prevention and Reduction Project (GHARP).
GHARP, in a release, yesterday, said that the Coalition which is in fact a rapidly expanding alliance of organisations dedicated to mitigating the effects of HIV will be launched as an independent entity in Guyana.
According to the release, it was in recognition that Guyana has one of the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the Pan Caribbean region, that GHARP in partnership with the local Ministry of Health has for the past three years been working together to help develop the strategy and framework for the coalition.
Reports are that the formulation of the Coalition started with a few partners in 2005 and subsequently expanded to 43 organisations. However, it was only during the past three years that the partners organised themselves as the private sector advisory board which was a precursor to the coalition. It is believed that the formal launch will help to develop a more coordinated framework for all to share their voices, best practices, expertise and resources as well as opportunity for the coalition to continue their model practices in the region.
The landmark event is slated to be undertaken on May 30 at the Guyana International Conference Centre (GICC) and will be officiated by President Bharrat Jagdeo and the Chairperson of the new Coalition, Ms Amanda St Aubyn, Country Director of Scotia Bank.
The event will accordingly host local private and public sector officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps, the press as well as regional and international guests.
In keeping with its purpose, the event will be co-branded by the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, which is a global organisation dedicated to harnessing the power of the private sector to help identify and develop breakthrough interventions in workplaces and communities.
