Several youths, community and church leaders from the West Bank of Demerara were the main target group of a peer educators’ workshop. The two-day workshop which began yesterday at the Young Men’s Christian Association will conclude today.
The sessions are being funded collaboratively by the Ministry of Health and the World Bank and facilitated by the Family Planning Association of Guyana.
Coordinator of the Project, Ms. Maureen Williams in an interview with this newspaper said the workshop is a follow-up to several outreach programmes which were held on the West Bank of Demerara. The aim of the workshop is to build capacity within the communities.
“During the latter part of last year we held several outreach programmes in various communities so what we are doing is working with persons from the communities so that they could in turn serve their communities,” Williams pointed out.
She added that during the workshop participants will be enlightened on HIV/AIDS prevention, learn the basics of Sexually Transmitted Infections, improve their communication skills, learn how to plan for peer education sessions and learn to facilitate the transfer of information from peer education to the wider community.
Williams reiterated that their ultimate goal is to provide training for persons to become HIV/AIDS educators for the Family Planning Association of Guyana.
Meanwhile, during the two day forum, issues which will be up for discussion will include the responsibilities that come along with living with HIV, stigma and discrimination, personal risk assessment and behaviour changes among others. In addition, come May 24 and 25, another two-day session will be facilitated.
Also, too, the Family Planning Association will soon be targeting communities in the Pomeroon area. According to Ms. Williams, they will be seeking to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS and sexual reproduction. Williams pointed out that they have recognized the need for such a programme in that area because of the increasing incidences in that community. She added that testing sessions will also be done in the area. The sessions are billed for July 1-5.
