(Kaieteur News) – The Alliance For Change (AFC) on Thursday called for a thorough investigation into the mega farm owned and operated by President Irfaan Ali on the Linden Highway.
The former coalition party noted that efforts were made by a columnist to address concerns surrounding the financing arrangements, which it said raised further questions.
“Rather than providing clarity, these explanations raise further questions and appear designed to mislead the public regarding the true scale of the investment,” AFC said.
The party explained that it expected no less than detailed and comprehensive information to be provided by the Head of State himself to put to rest the growing concerns and speculation about the financing of the project.
Instead, the political group argued that the public has been fed with references to loans which in itself are grossly insufficient to explain the funding of a multi-billion-dollar agricultural enterprise.
According to the AFC, “Records indicate that on 9th July, 2012, an application for a credit facility of $30 million was submitted to a local financial institution to establish a modern poultry farm on 25 acres of leased land. That application was approved.”
It continued, “Subsequently, in March 2015, a request for additional working capital in the amount of $18 million was submitted to and approved by the same financial institution.” The two loans which total only $48M and referenced by the columnist fall dramatically short of the investment required for the massive facility operated by the President according to the AFC.
The party reasoned, “If the loan reportedly obtained in 2023 was not in excess of $1.5 billion, then the attempt to use the earlier $48 million in financing as justification for the development of the mega farm is nothing more than a distraction from the central issue: the source and scale of the funding behind the project.”
To this end, the AFC reiterated that the explanations provided by President Ali and his supporters have failed to adequately account for the massive investment required for the upscale agriculture project.
In the interest of transparency and accountability, the party demanded a full and credible explanation be provided to the public. Furthermore, the AFC called for a comprehensive and independent investigation into the financing of the President’s mega farm to thoroughly examine and address all questions surrounding the facility.
The president’s giant farm was first revealed to the public by Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed in an explosive documentary where the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party leader showed images and videos of the property acquired by the head of state. The agricultural venture entails the rearing of 80,000 chickens, 200 sheep, 500 Brazilian cows, 50 goats, a private creek and a residential ranch home which features a swimming pool, paved pool deck, gazebo, and an outdoor kitchen among others. The farm also features two fish cages with the capacity to produce up to 75,000 fish each but the operation does not end there. It also entails nine long-span, modern tunnel greenhouses and parallel hydroponic farms arranged in organised rows for extensive agricultural production, seven shade houses, orchard and citrus production and living quarters for workers.
In a video presentation, Ali accepted ownership of the massive venture but denied that the enterprise spanned 150 acres. He explained that before he became president, he acquired the land and all of his assets have been submitted to the Integrity Commission. Notably, the president said he took “huge loans” to support his business while providing no evidence or documentation to lay concerns of corruption to rest.
Since the expose by Mohamed, opposition parties and various groups have called for a thorough investigation into the questionable acquisition of the mega facility by the president.
