Pace and Power Gym take top honours at GBA’s at Developmental Tournament

(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) continued its push to strengthen the country’s boxing pipeline when it hosted an After Championship Developmental Tournament on September 5 at the Andrew “Six Head” Lewis Boxing Gym, with emerging talent getting valuable ring time across 12 bouts.

The tournament brought together boxers from Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym, New Amsterdam Boxing Academy (NABA), Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG), and Pace and Power Boxing Gym, with the programme spanning the U13, U15, U17 and U19 age categories.

While competition was spirited throughout the afternoon, the tournament’s developmental purpose was equally important, giving young fighters an opportunity to gain experience, test their skills under competitive conditions and continue their progression through the amateur ranks.

The U13 division produced the largest share of the action, with seven bouts contested across various weight classes.

At 25kg, Abu Barker of Harpy Eagles got the better of fellow gymmate Trayvon Brant, earning a points victory.

Nathan Sugrim, also of Harpy Eagles, secured a closely contested split-decision victory over Omar Lindore at 31kg.

At 35kg, Imhotep Vanderstoop of Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym advanced by walkover against Devon Andrews, before another Vanderstoop, Marcus, produced one of the tournament’s standout performances.

Competing at 41kg, Marcus Vanderstoop stopped Devon Andrews in the second round, in a performance that ultimately earned him the distinction of Best Boxer in the U13 category.

Pace and Power Gym also enjoyed considerable success among the younger competitors. At 39kg, Carl Lindore stopped Harpy Eagles’ Tayvon Brant in the opening round, while Akeem Quintin added another stoppage for Pace & Power with a second-round victory over Omar Barker at 46kg.

The 46kg division produced another first-round stoppage, with Trimaine Lindore of Pace and Power defeating Donovan Troy in the opening round.

The U15 category featured a 60kg bout between Pace and Power teammates Akeem Ross and Kevin Medas. Ross picked up the victory after Medas abandoned the contest in the opening round, earning Ross the Best Boxer award for the age group.

The U17 division saw Itavius Vanderstoop of Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym outpoint Pace and Power’s Troymell Matherson at 51kg.

Vanderstoop’s performance earned him the Best Boxer award in his category.

There was little time wasted in the U19 division. At 70kg, Simeon Haymer of Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym stopped Emmanuel Sandiford of Pace and Power in the first round, earning the Best Boxer award for the U19 category.

The remaining bouts saw NABA’s Ukesh Persaud earn a points victory over Harpy Eagles’ Kelon Mullin at 37kg, while Curtis McDonald of NABA edged Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym’s Izzla Vanderstoop by split decision in their 65kg U19 encounter.

The tournament also provided a competitive platform for the participating gyms, with Pace and Power emerging as the Best Gym with four points.

Harpy Eagles and Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym finished joint runners-up with three points apiece, reflecting the closely fought nature of the competition and the depth of talent displayed across the participating boxing gyms.
