Two arrested for stealing copper wire from Demerara River Bridge
(Kaieteur News) – Police are likely to charge two suspects today for the alleged theft of 90 feet of 4/350 KCMIL copper cable worth some $1.6 million from the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed on Thursday.
Late Wednesday evening a man was nabbed after he was caught with wire cutting materials at the bridge. His photo and video of his capture were widely circulated. His arrest reportedly led police to recover two pieces of Copper Cables from a location at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE). Another suspect was also arrested.
One of the suspects that was nabbed on Wednesday evening.
Reports are that he might be a scrap metals dealer from Albouystown, Georgetown. “The (recovered) copper wire was photographed and lodged as part of the ongoing investigation”, police stated in a press release early Thursday.
The cables were discovered missing on Tuesday after an electrical maintenance engineer attempted to illuminate the bridge in the colours of the Trinidadian flag in observance of that country’s 64th Independence Anniversary.

He noticed that only the LED lights on the northern end of the bridge were working.
Police said that at around 09:00hrs the following day, the engineer and his team inspected the southern side of the bridge and discovered that the copper cables had been cut and removed from the metal trunking box.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Providence Police Station. Detectives believe that the theft reportedly occurred sometime between 00:00hrs on August 23, 2026, and 09:00hrs on September 1, 2026. According to the engineer, the lights are attached to steel poles along the bridge’s high span and powered by a generator beneath the structure and were last operated on August 23, 2026.
