Kangaruma Village to get first nursery school building
(Kaieteur News) – The remote Amerindian community of Kangaruma, which is located in Middle Mazaruni, Region Seven is set to get its first ever nursery school building.
The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Seven in a recent invitation for bids is seeking contractors to undertake the construction of the nursery school building. According to the advertisement, the government has estimated the school project to cost $65.08 million.
This publication understands that Kangaruma Village never had a nursery school building of its own and the nursery classes are housed in the primary school building.

Toshao Raphael Joseph shared that there are approximately 30 students at the nursery level. “They are actually housing at the primary school, we use one school, the nursery and primary using one building,” he noted.
He said the classroom the nursery is occupying is divided in two with just a blackboard separating year 1 and year 2 students. Commenting on the government’s plans for a separate building for nursery he said this would provide learners with a more comfortable space to learn.
“It would be better for students to be more comfortable because at this time, the space there is not enough, they don’t have enough space to learn and putting up posters they don’t have space for that. If we had a school separate at least they would be more comfortable,” he explained.
This publication learned that the village does not have a secondary school building. The Toshao noted however, that there is a secondary school at Issano Village which is approximately 25 miles away that will cater for the secondary aged students.
On Monday, the Ministry of Education announced the opening of the brand new Issano Secondary School in Middle Mazaruni. The ministry stated that Issano launched with an initial cohort of 12 students who hail from Issano and Tassarene Villages. “Issano’s enrollment will expand significantly upon completion of its dormitory, which will house students from Kangaruma, Isseneru and surrounding riverine communities,” the ministry explained. As it relates to the remote community, Kangaruma has a population of approximately 430 residents, and when traveling from Bartica, it can be accessed by boat which takes about four to five hours.
