(Kaieteur News) – Australian-listed mining company, Altair Minerals Limited has announced that it has secured 29 square kilometres (km²) of critical adjoining permits to its South Oko (SOKO) project within the Greater Oko Gold Project, Region Seven.
The company in its announcement said the expansion increases its exposure to the Oko Shear Contact by 30% to approximately 18km of highly prospective strike.
In August, Kaieteur News reported that Altair and another Australian mining company – Liberty Metals have secured individual interests in gold-bearing lands covering about 770 square kilometres (km²) in Guyana’s Oko gold district, an area where nine million ounces of gold have already been established by other foreign players.
It was reported that Altair holds 70% interest in the Greater Oko Gold Project which spans across 590 km² contiguous mining lands, while Liberty holds 90% interest in the Oko North and Oko South Gold Projects, a package of 40 granted medium-scale mining permits covering approximately 180 km².
With the additional 29km², this brings Altair’s total land holdings in Guyana’s Oko gold district to approximately 619km².

According to a document released on Thursday, the company said the new permits directly adjoin and are adjacent to the highly compelling South Oko project area, and the permits also adjoin the area in which Altair is currently drilling and conducting geochemical extension sampling at SOKO, allowing for seamless integration of the new permit area into the company’s work programmes, fast-tracking target development and drill testing.
Speaking on its new permits, Altair explained that it has been strategically selected due to hosting prospective geology units, positioned within a proven mineralised structural corridor; aeromagnetics identifying favourable hydrothermal structural conduits and iron-rich Mafics; stream anomalies and positioned within primary source area to alluvial gold workings; and its potential to host the geochemical extensions to SOKO along an analogous structural setting.
In its announcement, Altair disclosed that the expansion follows detailed geological reviews and consideration of multiple datasets, including aeromagnetic survey, mapping, stream sediment samples, historic alluvial workings, structural continuity and hosting potential extensions to the geochemical trends at SOKO. In doing so, these new permits were hand-selected by Altair, as the most prospective zones to host a large-scale discovery, falling within the right geological setting and endowed corridor, the company stated.
Additionally, the Australian firm said the expansion was a result of its strong in-country networks and supportive Greater Oko Vendors, alongside detailed geological work.
Altair noted the expansion is aligned with the company’s strategy in efficiently managing a remarkably large-scale project – which is to streamline its focus to the most prospective permits, rapid testing and target development and aggressively invest towards the most prospective corridors.
Noting that the expansion has established Altair as the prime explorer to this emerging greenstone shear zone, the company added “the expansion reaffirms and maintains Altair’s Greater Oko Project as the largest gold exploration project in the country, now with a total of 457km2.”
Commenting on the expansion, Chief Executive Officer of Altair Minerals Limited CEO, Faheem Ahmed, said “The importance of this milestone should not be underestimated, as we’ve spent numerous months closely looking at the geology, geochemistry, geomorphology and structural extensions to the mineralised corridors within the district – and identified these permits as high-priority due to them hosting all the key ingredients required for a potential discovery.”
Noting that this marks a significant material milestone in executing the company’s long-term plans at SOKO, the CEO expressed that they have secured and established themselves as the dominant player in the Oko district, with the most significant strike exposure to the globally emerging shear zone, primarily driven by the Oko Shear Contact, the key structural control between granite and greenstone to emplacing the tier-1 deposits uncovered to date on the district.
Importantly, he said, unlike the northern targets at SOKO which took numerous months to develop from scratch, Altair now have an astute execution-ready exploration team and camps at SOKO which are fully equipped and ready to commence work on these new permits immediately.
According to the CEO, they believe it will take less than three-months to develop new targets across these permits which can be seamlessly integrated into their current RC (Reverse Circulation) programme or into a subsequent diamond drill programme.
Further, he said the expansion has come at a pertinent time for the company, as SOKO continues to demonstrate tremendous potential for discovery. “I look forward to updating all shareholders with future exploration developments as we execute high-impact exploration programmes at Greater Oko,” the CEO disclosed.
As reported previously, Altair’s entry into the resource rich area was secured a year ago, when it entered into a binding head of agreement in August 2025, via a deal with Guyanese conglomerate, Adamantium Exploration Inc., a company owned by the Alphonso family. The Company holds 70% interest in the Greater Oko Gold Project.
