4-year-old killed as car overturns repeatedly on St. Cuthbert’s trail
(Kaieteur News) – Police are investigating a fatal incident that occurred Sunday afternoon along the St. Cuthbert’s Mission Trail, Mahaica River, East Coast Demerara.
The incident involved motorcar PAJ 5607, owned and driven by a 28-year-old welder of Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway. The occupants were a 24-year-old woman and a 4-year-old, of the same address.
According to a police release, the driver reported he was proceeding west along the trail when an approaching vehicle travelling at a fast rate created a large cloud of dust which obstructed his vision. He alleged that another motorcar subsequently entered his lane, causing him to swerve to avoid a collision and reportedly lost control of his vehicle, which overturned several times.
He and the two occupants sustained injuries and were taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital and the 4-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver and female occupant were treated and discharged. The child’s body was taken to Sandy’s Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. The scene was visited and examined by police ranks. The driver is currently in custody and assisting with the ongoing investigation. Further details will be provided as the investigation progresses.
