(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh when a driver fall asleep at de wheel, he could wake up in a trench. When de media fall asleep at de wheel, de whole country could end up in one, and dem reporters still asking who put de vehicle in gear!
Right now, Guyana got a mystery worthy of Sherlock Holmes, but de media behaving like Sherlock gone on vacation and left Watson home sleeping. We got two contested versions of what transpired during an incident involving de Leader of de Opposition. De police got dem story, and de Opposition Leader got he own. But who telling de truth? And who writing fiction worthy of a place on de bestseller list?
Dem boys waiting to see which newsroom would wake up and start investigating. Instead, everybody seem content to report what each side seh, then go home and sleep peacefully. Is that journalism, or is it stenography with a press card?
And talking about de Leader of de Opposition, have you ever notice how one family member does repeat that title with such pride? Every time de words come out, you would think somebody announcing de arrival of royalty. De Leader of de Opposition! Not just a politician, mind you, but apparently somebody who deserve a trumpet fanfare and a red carpet whenever he step out de house.
Dem boys want remind people that de office is constitutional, not hereditary royalty. It entitle the holder to respect, but it entitle him to scrutiny too. In a democracy, a title is not a magic wand that turn every statement into gospel truth.
So here is where de media could earn its salary. Test de competing hypothesis. Interview the witnesses. Examine the police account. Seek corroboration for the Opposition Leader’s version. Check the available video footage, establish the timeline, and ask the questions that neither side might particularly enjoy answering.
If de evidence support de police, publish it. If it support de Opposition Leader, publish that too. And if neither version fully explain what happen, tell de public that.
Dem boys know that investigative journalism does require work. It might even require a reporter to miss lunch. But that is the price of keeping the public informed.
Because when two sides tell different stories, the journalist’s job is not to choose which side sound sweeter. Is to find out which story stand up to scrutiny.
Otherwise, Guyana could soon have a new national pastime: politicians telling stories, police telling stories, and journalists recording bedtime stories.
Wake up, media! De country need answers, not lullabies.
Talk half. Leff half.
