(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh nowadays, if yuh want know who is a heroine in Guyana, doh bother look pun de battlefield. Just open Facebook! Every day, a new set of queens emerging. One buying a car, another building a house, and a next one talking bout how God bless she and how she achieve everything through hard work and determination.
Dem does post up dem picture beside dem car, in front of dem house, and sometimes in dem new kitchen, looking like dem just win a Nobel Prize in economics. Dem boys ain’t begrudge nobody success. If yuh work hard and get through, yuh deserve a medal. But some of dem success stories got more chapters than a soap opera.
When yuh start skinning up de files, yuh sometimes discover that behind de independent woman is a very dependable fairy godfather. He ain’t waving no magic wand. He waving a wad of money! And while Cinderella does lose she slipper at midnight, some of these modern-day princesses does lose all memory of who paying de bills.
Dem does talk bout being self-made, but dem foundation got somebody else’s cement. Dem boast bout buying dem own car, but dem never mention who driving de money into dem account. Dem talking bout building a house, but dem keeping de identity of de chief contractor classified like a state secret.
And Facebook does applaud! Everybody clapping, sharing, and telling dem how inspirational dem is. If yuh believe everything yuh read, every young woman in Guyana is a millionaire before thirty, and every man in de country is either a fairy godfather or looking for a job as one.
But while these social media celebrities busy polishing dem halos, there are real heroines right here in Guyana who ain’t got time to pose for pictures. Dem is de mothers who stretch a small salary to feed a family, pay bills, buy school supplies, and still find money for a child who suddenly remember that tomorrow is Sports Day.
Dem is de daughters who go to work all day, travelling by minibus, come home exhausted, cook, clean, care for children and elderly parents, and sometimes go to bed hungry so dem pickney can eat. Nobody giving dem a standing ovation. Nobody posting inspirational quotes bout dem sacrifices. Dem ain’t trending, but dem keeping families alive.
So, hail up to dem hardworking mothers and daughters battling this high cost of living with courage, dignity, and determination. Dem don’t need a fairy godfather to make dem heroines. Dem proving every day that real greatness ain’t measured by de car in de driveway or de house in de photograph.
It measured by how much yuh carry when nobody watching, and how much yuh give when yuh got barely enough for yuhself. And dem boys seh, if Facebook start giving out medals for surviving life on a small salary, half of Guyana’s mothers would need a bigger wall to hang dem all!
Talk half. Leff half.
